Mining
Challenges
Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth, usually from an ore body, vein or coal.
This industry helps to achieve sustainable economic growth in terms of creating employment, prosperity and quality of living in the communities they are operational, which in some cases is the major source of employment in the area or country.
Though mining stimulates the (local) economy, it also includes environmental concerns that can consist of erosion, formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, and contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water by chemicals from mining processes.
Besides creating environmental damage, the contamination resulting from leakage of chemicals also affects the health of the local population.
Following a number of recent incidents and deaths in the mining sector, safety issues are front and centre in the challenges that are confronting the industry.
Whether motivated by the economy, competition or a shift in strategic focus, the dialogue in some boardrooms has to answer to the following questions:
- What changes can we make to protect the local communities to be affected by the chemicals?
- What can we do to face all the environmental issues?
- Why is the local community so important?
- How can we make this industry safer?
